Wasn't it just last week that I was blogging about Asashoryu's place in sumo history and commenting on how sumo officials seem to be out to get him? Turns out he has since been censured by the Yokozuna Deliberation Committee for raising his arms after his intense battle with Hakuho on Sunday. What surprises me is that this appears to be only the second time he has been disciplined for celebrating a victory. On many occasions in the past, I have witnessed Asa actually smiling after a win. Scandalous, I know, but it has happened.
Fumitaka Nakajima offers an interesting editorial [Edit: Broken link] on the subject, pointedly commenting that the ozeki could use a little more of Asa's fighting spirit if they ever hope to achieve the highest rank in sumo.

When I saw him raise his arms I was surprised because I don't recall every seeing a wrestler do that before.
