Kyoto Visitor Guide Showcases Shisendo

The November 2010 issue of the Kyoto Visitor's Guide features a walking tour of northeast Kyoto that starts with Shisendo. If you have never been to Kyoto but are planning on visiting, make sure you pick up a copy of KVG as soon as you get off the train or bus, because it will save you from having to buy a city guide. Besides the feature stories, it is loaded with useful information about special events, and it includes the only transportation map you'll really need.

While I've been to all the places listed in the walk, I've never followed the exact route they describe. It sounds like a good one though, especially with its promise of the following scenic view on the walk from Shisendo to Manshuin.

This is one of the most unusual views in Kyoto, offering a totally green and wild view across the valley. There's not one hint of the city in sight.
The story provides a brief bio of Ishikawa Jozan, but sadly omits his name. There would be no Shisendo without him after all. There is also one small error in the article that bears correcting. It states that Nobotuke-an is "directly next door" to Shisendo, when actually it is across the road and slightly to the right. That aside, it offers a nice itinerary, although I would be tempted to fit in a short detour to Konpukuji as well. If you're new to Over a Hedge, might I also humbly suggest checking out my posts about the same attractions listed in the walk.

Shugakuin: This post also provides a link to the Imperial Household Agency that you will want to read before you visit.

Haiku Poets, a Shogun, and a Swordsman: Everything you need to know about Shisendo's neighbours.
